The Local Area

Vamos and Litsarda
are centrally located in the Apokoronas area, equal distance between
Rethymnon and Chania. An area of outstanding natural beauty, lovely sandy beaches, turquoise blue seas and interesting
places to visit. A great location from which to explore Crete.

Vamos is the capital of the Apokoronas area and is an exceptionally interesting traditional village. It is more like a small town because of its facilities. It is very well preserved, with folk and Neoclassical architecture. The beauty of the village is the relaxing pace of life. In such a peaceful location, offering warm hospitality, there are interesting cobbled streets, beautiful old buildings behind many of which lies a story.....

Vamos Village Facilities Include: The exemplary local tavernas offer delightful Cretan specialities cooked by traditional methods.
A couple of simple souvlaki tavernas, coffee shops, mini markets, bakery, pharmacy, butcher, dentist, doctor, a bank with 24 hour ATM machine. There are also traditional shops selling local wines, honey, nuts and ceramics.

Litsarda is a sleepy village located approximately 5 minutes drive from Vamos village centre.

Litsarda village and the immediate surrounding area is flat countryside that offers amazing views to the white mountains. Depending on winter snowfall, the mountains remain snow capped from December to early June lending the area to outstanding beauty . At times you would be forgiven for thinking you were in the Austrian countryside.

There are several easy tracks and roadways that can be enjoyed by foot or bicycle and further exploration by car allows you to enjoy some of the most stunning scenery found in Crete.

Flights to Crete

Here are a few tips to help you to decide which airport is more suitable for your needs when travelling to Crete

Crete has 2 airports: Heraklion and Chania

It is worth noting that there is a motorway which stretches almost the entire North coast and in most cases this is now dual carriageway. This allows for faster, easier access between airports.

1. HeraklionAirport
(Airport code: HER)

Heraklion is the busiest airport in Crete and the most popular airport for many airline companies. You will normally find a larger selection of flight timings and flight days to suit your needs.

The airport is situated in a fairly central location on the North coast and within approx 90 minutes drive of our cottages.

2. Chania Airport
(Airport code: CHQ)

Chania airport is much smaller in comparison to Heraklion airport, has less traffic and slightly less facilities but has a more relaxed, laid-back feel about it.
There is a smaller selection of airlines and flight days available to chose from.
Chania airport is the better option if you prefer a quick transfer from airport to accommodation and is within approx 45 minutes drive of our cottages.
